Markel Corporation, the parent company of Markel Shand, Inc., has been selected as one of the 2008 Ward's 50^® Top Performers in the property and casualty industry.

Ward Group, based out of Cincinnati, ranked companies after an in-depth financial performance review of approximately 3,000 businesses.  Companies in the top 50 produced a return on average equity that is roughly 4% higher than the property and casualty industry overall during the period of 2003-2007.
